The Windy City: Chicago

About the Chicago River

Chicago is located on the southern end of Lake Michigan, which is the third largest lake in the U.S. The Chicago River was originally a river that ran through the center of Chicago and into Lake Michigan. However, in 1900, a new canal was built on the Chicago River, making its bottom lower than the lake's surface. This reversed the flow of water, which now flows from Lake Michigan and flows into central Chicago.
